As Senior Equity Research Analyst, Sean is an integral part of our investment strategy by contributing towards identifying alpha opportunities in the emerging markets and global ethical mandates.

Sean has over 15 years of direct investment experience in emerging markets, both as an Analyst and a Portfolio Manager. Prior to joining our team, he co-managed a long-only, emerging markets equity mandate at ADIA, with over $2 B in assets. Sean is experienced in bottom-up fundamental stock selection and analysis, portfolio construction and risk management. He has been a financials and materials sector specialist across an emerging markets regional geography with over 50 stocks under primary coverage.

Sean spent the first five years of his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers as an Article Clerk and Senior Manager in the Banking & Capital Markets team in Johannesburg, South Africa. A secondment to New York provided an opportunity to understand the machinations of emerging markets hedge funds and piqued his interest in all things investing. Bitten by the investment bug, Sean set off to pursue a journey on the buy-side and subsequently spent 3 years at South Africa’s largest retail bank as an Equity Research analyst with a focus on the financials sector.

In early 2010, Sean joined the equities team at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (“ADIA”) in the UAE as a Senior Investment Manager responsible for the management and coverage of the financials sector of emerging markets. A focus on high quality stocks with strong secular growth narratives underpinned significant alpha generation, as the mandate grew into being one of the largest EMEA funds globally. In 2014, Sean was tasked with co-managing the fund, which significantly broadened his appreciation of the investment universe and the nuances associated with portfolio construction for a particularly volatile region.

A newcomer to Canada, Sean has won over the hearts of the locals in demonstrating social success on the curling ice with a track record most Africans would be proud of. He enjoys exploring his new home with his wife and daughters and has come to appreciate the beauty of four seasons.
